The COMPLEAT HISTORY of Harry

Harry was founded January, 1977.

One of these days, your webmaster really needs to get something special
written regarding Harry's historical First Meeting. And the origin of
the club's name. Suffice it to say, the Founders erected a monument that
has endured for over 24 years............

To put it musically...
H... A... double-R...Y: that's how we spell Harry's name.
Proud of all the fannish blood that's in us.
Not a fan can say a word again' us: 'cause at
H... A... double-R...Y: it's S.F. we discuss.
Our club discusses Science Fiction (some would say it's our addiction!);
Harry - that's us.

Harry Meetings through the present day....

The fog of expanding spacetime has engulfed 1977 through 1986...

However, we can recall that Sam Moskowitz' Science Fiction By Gaslight was the first book Harry read.

HARRY'S CANTONIAN SCIENCE FICTION YEAR: 1996

JANUARY 96 HARRY PROGRAM: _ORBITAL DECAY_ by Allen Steele.
Or any work in his universe of biker-deadhead space-station construction
workers.

HARRY ANNIVERSARY BANQUET was at Mozart's for brunch at 12:30 Feb. 11th.

FEBRUARY 96 HARRY PROGRAM: _MORE THAN HUMAN_ by Theodore Sturgeon.
Or "Baby Is Three", the core story of the novel.

Sandi compared Sturgeon's work to _Galactic Troubadors_ by A. M. Lightner.
Philip made points about H. G. Wells' creations, the Eloi and the Morloch, and
the evolution of humanity. Sandi thought the _gestalt_ concept in the novel
reminded one of both the IDIC in Star Trek, and Gordy Dickson's different
societies. All illustrate the need for balance in humanity.

Unofficial topics included a Boskone con report (M+D went), Philip's findings
at the book sale, photos & talk about Alderford, the local SCA marche.

MARCH 96 HARRY PROGRAM:_HALF THE DAY IS NIGHT_ by Maureen F. McHugh.
This is a remarkable novel set in an underwater city so large it has freeways
inside. Jean David Dai must struggle to survive the attacks of terrorists, a
hostile government, and the unforgiving ocean depths.

This book was out in paperback! So everybody was asked to get a copy please.

APRIL 96 HARRY PROGRAM: Maureen F. McHugh visited the meeting.
Harry was quite excited at this and over 30 people turned out to meet her.
The program included a reading of the short story "The Lincoln Train",
and a Q&A period, plus the usual nonsense. "The Lincoln Train", of course,
went on to win the Hugo award for Best Short Story of 1995.

Maureen F. McHugh is the critically acclaimed author of _China Mountain Zhang_,
_Half the Day Is Night_, and a number of shorter works.

MAY 17TH 96 - PAVILIONS OF WONDER, THE ART OF SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY opened at the Canton Museum of Art.

A hyperlink to the museum and a retrospective is on Harry's links page.

This outstanding show featured original works by over thirty of America's
premiere Science Fiction & Fantasy artists, and a costume party.

Harry's meetings that featured a special guest were dubbed as " a literature
program sponsored by Harry".

Special Summer Reading programs were based on Dean Morrisey's _Ship Of Dreams_
and ran throughout the season.

The Museum of Art held family and young artist workships on stf-nal themes;
Alien Masks, Fantasy Land, SFX Photography, Design of Symbols for
Intersellar Communication, Super Heroes, Time Machines, and so on.

The Video Safari tape rental chain did an 88 cent special for SF flicks all
summer.

May 17th - Intergalactic Renaissance Ball was held at the Cultural Center.
Prizes were awarded for best alien, best Renaissance, etc.

MAY 96 HARRY PROGRAM: Joe Clifford Faust visited the meeting!
Mr. Faust is the author of _A Death Of Honor_, _The Company Man_, _Desperate
Measures_, _Precious Cargo_, and _The Essence Of Evil_, the last three being
the Angel's Luck series. He had been to Harry before, to read us samples of
his forthcoming Ferman's Devils series, and his return was greeted with
enthusiasm.

June 7th - Brannon Braga, producer & writer of ST:TNG & ST:Voyager spoke
at Canton Museum of Art. The event was titled "From Canton To the Final
Frontier".
Braga spent his formative years here in Canton. He was a student in the
class of Pavilions of Wonder's Guest Curator, Dr. Sam Vasbinder, and was a
1983 McKinley High School graduate.

Mr. Braga provided brief previews of (at the time) upcoming _ST:Voyager_
episodes as part of a slide-show and videotape showing. "Basics, Part 2"
would feature the crew reduced to fighting with sticks & stones, while the
killer from the recent "MindMeld" episode & the holographic doctor save
Voyager. Braga promises there will be no more Kazons after this episode.
There will however be a Ferengi episode in the future. The show "Sacred
Ground" will feature Janeway on a great Quest. It will be plotted similarly
to the film "A Man Called Horse", and sounds like it should be full of spirit
guides & suchlike.

Bragga revealed the BIG new episode was plotted to be the Star Trek 30th
Anniversary tribute. Vulcan Tuvok served on Capt. Sulu's ship, and Janeway
experiences it through some means. Both George Takei and Grace Lee Whitney
were revealed to be in the episode.

Mr. Braga also discussed the use of the Paramount Star Trek script submission
hotline.

JUNE 96 HARRY PROGRAM: Dr. Sam Vasbinder visited the meeting.
Dr. Vasbinder was the curator of the awesome and artistically successful
Pavilions Of Wonder art show.

He related Joe DeVito's reaction to his review in the Beacon Journal.
"Artists visualize the worlds writers present to us."
But what if it's not the way I imagined it?
He discusses Whelan from his older stuff up thru Passages.
Whelan's Wave:Malthus needs to be hung a little higher. The wave is like
something from the past.
Artists produce textures, the feel of cloth, the feel of ALIEN objects.
Mattingly does pure invention of forms that have not existed before.

JULY 96 HARRY PROGRAM: R. M. Meluch visited the meeting.
Ms. Meluch is the author of _Sovereign_, _Wind Dancers_, _Wind Child_,
_Jerusalem Fire_, _War Birds_, _Chicago Red,_ and _The Queen's Squadron_. She
is a frequent panel participant (antagonist?) at area SF conventions and is
well-known to many of Harry's members.

Meluch spoke on the topic, "What is SF today?". Most SF today, she suggested,
is to boldly go where everybody and his dog went before. It is a day of
multi-volume serials.

SF should be conceiving of new technologies. On TV, the weapons sights on SF
series need improvement, they're no better than the ones used in _Combat_ or
_Rat Patrol_.

Leaps in communication can be predicted. We have affordable "Star Trek"
communicators now, what will the future bring? The world is shrinking, but
space has not. Instellar distances still seem insurmountable. This makes for
a scientific challenge when writing SF. Meluch designed special space
combat strategies to use when FTL sonar-like tracking devices could "ping"
enemy ships. SF can help one release aggression. Instead, today's SF often
panders to the paranoiac. For example, Michael Crichton is a whore.

As to the future of politics, the balance of freedoms will become an
increasingly important issue. Meluch quoted John Adams on democracy. She
read from one of her works about a race that had 11 fingers, and so saw
equality in a greatly differnt light than Terrans. While SF stirs you up,
modern literary fiction puts you back in the box and tells you to calm down.
Attendance = 14.

July 13th - Harry's Summer Frolic at Sandi's.
July 14th - LAST DAY for PAVILIONS OF WONDER.

AUGUST 96 HARRY PROGRAM: Discussion, Summer TV & Movies.
After several months of guest speakers, we had a lot to talk about.
Independence Day was the top box office movie ever. Babylon 5 had a dynamite
2-part episode, "War Without End". We weren't to see any new Babylon 5
episodes until October, so let's enjoy the reruns! Fox ran the new Dr. Who
episode/pilot, which featured the Doctor smooching some rather unbelievable
heart surgeon. Odo lost his morph powers, at least for the summer hiatus.
And so it goes...

AUG 29-SEP 2 WorldCon/L.A.Con 3, Anaheim, CA

SEPTEMBER 6-8 HOPE CON 96, the Klingon Assault Group International Convention,
at the Newmarket Hilton in downtown Canton, Ohio. Tony Todd (Kurn) is GOH.
The _IKV Night Terror_ was the force behind this one, and Harry wished the
ship & her crew the best of luck with the con.

SEPTEMBER 96 HARRY PROGRAM: J.R.R. Tolkien's unpublished final chapter of
The Lord Of the Rings. This appears in Sauron Defeated, Vol IX of the History
Of Middle-Earth, Chapter XI, The Epilogue.
Sam Gamgee and his children discuss the events of the Great War, and prepare
for a visit from the King. Also discussed Trek, Sheffield, Asimov.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1996 - PARTY! STAR TREK 30th ANNIVERSARY.
Started at 1:00 PM, the annual Harry Star Trek Anniversary Party was at Mary +
Doug's house. This was a punch & munchies party, not a full meal party.

OCTOBER 4-6 CONTEXT, Harley (by the Continent), Columbus

OCTOBER 96 HARRY PROGRAM: _Guilty Pleasures_ by Laurell K. Hamilton.

OCT 25-27, OVFF - OHIO VALLEY FILK FEST.

NOVEMBER 96 HARRY PROGRAM: _The Diamond Age_ by Neal Stephenson.

DECEMBER 96 HARRY PROGRAM: _ST:TNG_FIRST CONTACT_ (film) discussed. Also
discussed: the publication of _FERMAN'S DEVILS_, part 1 of Pembroke Hall
by Joe Clifford Faust.

HARRY MEETINGS FOR 1997

JANUARY MEETING: _On Basilisk Station_, an Honor Harrington series novel,
by David Weber. This novel was well received! A lot of great action and
interesting plot and characterization.

HARRY ANNIVERSARY PARTY - Held January 26 at Don Pancho's.

FEBRUARY MEETING: _Ferman's Devils_ by Joe Clifford Faust. This was very
well liked by EVERYBODY at Harry. Not everyone raved, but many did. Scott
passed along that it had MADE a weekend for him. He thought it was the
funniest thing he ever read. We discussed a very bad review of the novel
from the P.A.R.S.E.C. fanzine, and decided that reviewer just had no sense
of humor at all. We read some of our favorite commercial scripts out loud
to each other. It was discussed that a lot of the pleasures of the novel
were the same sort one gets from reading Dilbert, like a chance to laugh at
the types one finds in an office that you have to work with on a normal
day. Scott especially mentioned that several types were a perfect match
for characters and policies at his office. It was well remarked how
interesting it was to read a book when parts of it had been enacted for us
at the May '96 meeting. (10 in attendance)

Feb 14, 1997: Star Wars:A New Hope re-released, the 2 sequels followed.

MARCH MEETING: The Worst Science Fiction novel you ever read. 10 att.
We always talk about pretty good SF novels as topics of discussion. For
contrast, the topic of discussion was the WORST. Think science fiction, not
fantasy. Think really BAD. We came ready to talk about why it was bad.
TOWER OF ZANID, DeCamp
BORED OF THE RINGS, Lampoon
TEK, Shatner
Some novel about space yacht racing
NOVA, Delaney
3rd GOR novel and on, Norman
NUMBER OF THE BEAST, Heinlein
CHICAGO RED, Meluch
"Bosom Heavers"
SPACE CAPTIVES OF THE GOLDEN MEN
LORD FOUL'S BANE, Donaldson
PROSTHOS PLUS, Anthony
DUPLICATED MAN, Blish
JOSHUA, SON OF NONE, Nancy Freedman
THE SUNBIRD, Wilbur Smith
Some book by Walinsky

APRIL MEETING:The book for March was the original script of Star
Trek's _City On the Edge Of Forever_ by Harlan Ellison. This was out in
the stores & was available from SF Book Club too. Ellison always spoke out
against the treatment of his script by Trek's producers, this book is
purported to show us what it was he's been grousing about.

Harry's Rites Of Spring Party

MAY MEETING: Forgotten classics. Steven mentioned _Seeds of Change_ by
Thomas Monteleone. Lightner's Galactic Troubadors. Laser Books'
Crash Landing. On Iduna. Farley's THE ISLAND STALLION RACES. FLATLAND.
Anthony's BIO OF A SPACE TYRANT. Somebody cloned Kennedy.

24MAY _ RITES OF SPRING at Howard and Jeanne's.

JUNE MEETING: Discussion, series, the Discworld books, by Terry Pratchett.

JULY MEETING: _Green Mars_ by Kim Stanley Robinson. It was
compared to Ayn Rand for amount of political and economic dialog. Roberta
& others mentioned that you got to know Mars real well. It was described
as like RAH's _Moon Is a Harsh Mistress_, in that _Green Mars_ did for Mars
what the Heinlein novel did for Luna. A.C. Clarke's _The Sands Of Mars_
was cited for terraforming similarities.
ALSO DISCUSSED: The flicks _Men In Black__ (thumbs up) and _Contact_ (mixed
reviews).

AUGUST 1 - Harry's Summer Frolic Party at Sandi's.

AUGUST MEETING: Mars, any novel about Mars. Only 4 attending.
A general discussion meeting.

AUG 28-SEP 1, 1997 WorldCon/LoneStarCon 2, San Antonio, TX.

SEPTEMBER MEETING: Any STAR WARS novel. Star TREK novels are BETTER than
Star WARS novels. Norma reads them to find out what happened to the
characters. Sandi says Lucas' restrictions tie the authors down too far.
Roberta complains that things in Solo's life change but Solo doesn't.

OCTOBER MEETING: Anne Rice's _Memnoch The Devil_.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1ST - Harry Halloween Party at M+D's.

Oct 31-Nov 2: OVFF - Ohio Valley Filk Fest, Columbus.

NOVEMBER MEETING: Hugo Award Winning "Bicycle Repairman" by Bruce Sterling.

DECEMBER MEETING:Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein vs. Starship Troopers,
the new film.
